Cartoon Of The Day -- Jobless Claims Hit 7-Year High

Jobless claims are clearly on the rise. Indeed, the Labor Department yesterday said that jobless claims for last week jumped by 32,000 -- to a seasonally adjusted 516,000. This marked just the second time in 16 years that jobless claims for a week reached more than 500,000. And it was the highest reading since Sept. 2001 (story link here).

In light of the recent unemployment figures, I thought we could all use a nice giggle today. Here's the cartoon of the day. (Click the picture to enlarge.)

Change is coming! Woo!

“I never thought this day would happen. . . . I won’t have to work on puttin’ gas in my car. I won’t have to work at payin’ my mortgage. You know. If I help him (Obama), he’s gonna help me.”

The link above goes to a 24-second clip of a lady talking wonderfully about Obama.

I don't typically remove comments, but make sure that your comments -- and links -- don't stray too far from my blog's focus.

Over the past few days I have been getting spam from users looking to promote their sites. I immediately remove those comments.

CM I apologize in advance if this goes awry.... But some of you bitter McCain/Palin folks really need to stop being bitter and realize that the world is a different place nowadays. Clearly the negativity and fear tactics appealed to a segment of voters who are out of touch with the majority of Americans.

The woman clearly was emotional and was merely expressing her hopes that with the new administration she might not have to WORRY as much.

Anon, no worries. I have left both messages intact. I don't mind political commentary on the site. Just want to make sure that it is tangentially related to the stories that I post. LOL.

Where is Bob Wang?

I am Anon 1... To Anon 2,

Don't worry, I'm not a bitter McCain/Palin person. I'm definitely not an Obama person but I did vote McCain even though it was a choice of the lesser of 2 evils. The world is definitely a different place and understand some of the Obama excitement, just not to the extent that it got. No need for this to go awry as I'm always open to discussion and while I may not agree with you (assuming you are an Obama fan), it can be fun to get a few political jabs in from time to time, especially under the anonymity the internet can provide.

To CM, Totally understand your point, I felt the "don't need to worry about working" comments fit right in with the Unemployment cartoon. I thought the clip was hilarious and immediately thought of it after reading this cartoon. We definitely need BW to weigh in!

Anon 1 (I think I'll tag my posts like this regardless of my posting position!)

You guys could always create an Open ID name. That way you are still anonymous.

As I said earlier, I do not have a problem with any political commentary -- so long as we can tie it to my blog entries. That's why these comments are still here.

The lady did mention not having to work any more, etc.

So, it's fair game.

You getting spam too, huh? Tis the season

That cartoon was so funny -- and so sad. But hey, it is good to know I am on the track to financial well being!

Anon2 here. I am hardly defending that she represents the most eloquent speaker on behalf of the hope that Obama represents for a lot of people, however there's a big difference between "I won't have to work or pay for gas and mortgage" and "I won't have to WORRY about working and paying for gas and mortgage." Is it that much of a shock that someone would choose the candidate that they think would calm their worries about the economy?

I too respect an honest disagreement on who each of us felt was the better candidate, however I have a great distaste for the rabid appetite for negativity that this election cycle brought out in people. I don't expect to have to deal with that c**p here on CM so I had to speak out. Peggy Joseph, is not a public figure, and was just enjoying a moment in history with her kids. I just don't think its fair to see some of the vicious and downright racist comments about her all over the internet. I pray that you are never put in the position to have 17 seconds of your words picked apart by millions of strangers.

I heard that remark on the radio right after it happened, but to be fair (and balanced ;) I'm pretty sure she said she didn't have to "worry about" the gas and the mortgage, not "work at." Still implies that she thinks she'll be taken care of, but not worrying is a little better than not working. Back on topic? TGIF! I say that with gratitude that I have a job that brings me joy on Fridays, since I don't have to come back for 2 days. 2-day weekends beat unemployment any day.

cb, sure thing. TGIF. It's been a long week. Glad it's over.

Anon2, no worries. Feel free to speak your mind. I hope you don't think that my site is tolerant of mindless bigots. It's not.

Yeah, right. I have been to your blog sites before, BW. Don't give us that. We know better than that.

CitiBank notified me that they were raising my interest rate from 9.24 to 16.99. On Jan 31st, the last day to opt out, I decided to call and opt out as I just could not standby and have my rate increased when I have been with them for 18 years, no lates, no overlimits in recent years. The card carries a balance transfer of 2.99 which would have been fixed, however I wanted to make a point. Luckily I was in a position to pay off the balance if pushed. My account was going to expire 2/29/09 so I felt it was in my best interest to go ahead and opt out and close. When I called, the first rep offered to decrease the rate to 11.24 but I was still thinking, NO. Then he transfered me to a specialist, and they brought me back to 9.24, no problem at all. They were respectful and courteous, and willing to help. I use the card mainly for their favorable balance transfer deals - not for purchases, so I did not really want to close it - but as a consumer, you sometimes have to make a stand. AMEX is next on my list :-)
