The Future Of CreditMattersBlog.com

Law school has ended. Graduation is over. And the bar exam is in the rear-view mirror. My legal direction is all figured out. But what about CreditMattersBlog.com? That's what today's blog entry is about.

Many people have asked this question during the past six months: what's going to happen to the blog after graduation? I've always maintained that I would like to keep the blog going -- even after I was a lawyer. But I've recently had second thoughts about that. It was one thing to blog while I was a full-time law student (no big deal). But it's another thing entirely to think that I can blog while I am a full-time lawyer.

I've been able to blog from class; I won't be able to blog from court. What's more, my blogging has always been on my time. Now, it will be on my employer's time. Even if I could get my employer's permission (and I am sure I could), I would still feel odd about not giving the firm 100% of my time. First and foremost, my top priority is to the firm and my clients. Anything that takes away from that is, quite frankly, unacceptable to me.

The decision -- to blog or not -- is a tough one for me. It's so tough, in fact, that I consulted some of my closest confidants earlier this week -- to see what they thought of the situation. Here are some of their thoughts (each quote comes from a different person):

"Announce you're taking a leave of absence, and that the blog will remain up for posterity's sake...."

"Why not announce you are taking two to three weeks off and then you will come back with an extremely reduced schedule?" This person, by the way, thinks that I am "addicted" to writing. This person doesn't think I can stop writing even if I tried. This person is probably right, but I will have plenty of legal writing to do. It shouldn't be difficult to get my writing "fix."

"Everyone understands that your career is a top priority and no one will blame you for this move (in fact most of us can't figure out how you have kept your busy schedule along with your day-to-day involvement with the blog!)." When I initially consulted these people, I said that I planned to end my blog. Hence, the comment about "this move."

"If the cost of maintaining CreditMattersBlog.com is not very high, I would definitely keep it open. Perhaps you can give bi-weekly, or monthly commentaries on the state of credit in the U.S." I value this person's advice tremendously, by the way.

And finally, there was this one: "Personally, I think you should announce the way you think you'll really be heading. I would urge you to eschew sugarcoating your announcement, as I think a good bulk of your readers have grown fond of your blog and have built up something of a trust with you."

That last comment is the one that resonated most with me. During the past week, I've given it considerable thought. Will my future legal career allow me to blog on a regular basis? What's more, what will the blog be like during the next 60 days, when I am preparing for the bar exam?

Let me answer both of those questions -- taking the last question first. During the next 60 days, I will be studying for the bar. I will be dedicating all of my time to that endeavor. Period. The blog, at best, would be an afterthought. My guess is that I would have gone on hiatus for the next two months. There would not have been any blog posts.

Now, the longer-term question: will my future legal career allow me to blog on a regular basis? No. The days of blogging every day are over. I'm not kidding myself on that score.

Meanwhile, I could blog once every other week or even once every month, but I don't think that's what this blog is all about. Indeed, I'm convinced that most of my readers visit CreditMattersBlog.com not because of the stuff I write but because of the comments that my readers leave. I have a vibrant community here. The blog has logged nearly 17,000 comments in less than a year. That's a huge contribution by my readers. If I'm correct about the lure of my blog, this blog loses a lot of its appeal if I decide to write once a month.

So, let's cut to the chase. This is my plan: I don't plan to post a single blog entry for the next two months or so. After the bar exam (at the end of July), I could see myself posting a blog entry here and there. However, my activity will be inconsistent at best. What does this mean? It simply means that my blog -- as you have known it -- is no more.

Still, I do reserve the right to make a cameo appearance every now and then. If there is some earth-shattering news that I think my readers would be interested in, I'll write. (If you're interested in receiving those rare dispatches, I would advise you to get on my mailing list. You can subscribe to my blog posts here.) Otherwise, I don't expect to contribute much new material to this blog. By the way, I will also leave the comments section open. But the same rules still apply: all spam will be deleted (my readers never see spam because I delete it as soon as it appears). Also, no personal attacks will be allowed. By and large, my readers have always attacked issues -- and not each other. I'll continue to monitor all comments, though, just to make sure that doesn't change. I'll also be responding to comments as time permits. Ditto email.

Finally, it's been my great pleasure to serve everyone during the past ten months and change. Additionally, your daily participation has been appreciated. Tremendously appreciated. I could not have maintained this blog without your help.

That's about it. This, sadly, is where we say goodbye and go our own way.

I leave you with a quote and a video (below): "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." ~ attributed to Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss)

Smile. Ear to ear.

Take care.

CM, we are certainly going to miss you! I totally understand why you need to do this. Good luck with the bar and your studies over the next two months. We still have a plethora of information to peruse, and you have already covered a lot of the basics of credit. :)

CreditMattersBlog.com said...

Thanks, M. Looking forward to taking the next step.

And while I won't be around much, many of my long-time readers, I would imagine, will use that off-topic thread here at CMB. Newbies will pass through here (I get a lot of Google traffic). They'll ask questions. There will be people around here who will answer those questions.

So, I may not be around but others will be.

Congratulations on finishing up law school. We're all proud of you. And good luck on that bar exam. You're absolutely right, you'll be studying non-stop from here to there.

I don't know what area of law you're going into, but I followed another friend of mine through law school and all that. He's up in SF. He's got his full time job and still manages to play regular gigs (he's also a musician) and other things. So I believe that once things settle down, you'll be able to return.

In the meantime, I am subscribed here so I won't miss your return!

Congratulations again!

CreditMattersBlog.com said...

Thanks, CS.

I was reticent to say that I would eventually make a return -- because you never know. That's why I said that there will likely not be a return. If there is, great. If not -- I have that covered.

My intention is to not return. But we shall see. Maybe I'll have more free time than I thought I would. I'm just not counting on it.

Finally, CS, thanks for being a reader of mine. I've really appreciated your comments during the blog's operation.

Congrats on finishing law school! I will miss reading your posts, even though I haven't commented in a while. Thank you for all your insight and information and the countless hours you have spent blogging here. I will miss you! And good luck with the bar prep and your new future as a lawyer! :)

Sam, thanks for your well wishes. And thanks for your comments during the past 10 months. I've tried to remember every person who has posted around here. I notice when they haven't posted in a while, too. I've noticed your absence. You've been missed.

It's been my pleasure having you.

I just want to say "Thank You" for all the great thoughts and comments you've given us over the past (almost) year.

Congratulations on your graduation Counselor and keep fighting the good fight. We look forward to hearing from you during your cameo appearances.

And - just to let you know - you will be missed.

CreditMattersBlog.com said...

Thanks, FLT.

I've "known" you for a long time. I have nothing but respect for you. You've contributed greatly around here. Also, I know that many of you guys/gals will miss me but I'll miss you guys/gals just as much. I have come to enjoy my daily banter with everyone. It's my favorite part of the blog, too. So many readers have told me they love the comments that my blog gets. That's the most interesting part of the blog, they say. I concur.

That's the saddest part of my decision for me. No more daily interaction with everyone. And while I did not always see eye to eye with every reader, I still respected everything they had to say.

This has been a lot of fun for me. I'll miss it.

By the way, a little reporting for the road. A site is reporting that AmEx is now assessing a late fee of 3% of balance -- instead of a flat $39. The site is wrong.

According to an AmEx spokesperson, the site is confusing AmEx with another card issuer. The site is wrong.

You guys will need to keep other sites honest.

By the way, this thread also gives me a chance to do some recommendations.

For those looking for credit information, be sure to read Jane Kim at the Wall Street Journal. And don't forget my girl, Mary Pilon, over at the Wallet (at the Journal also).

If you've got debt issues that seem overwhelming, and don't know where to turn, please see Steve Rhode over at http://getoutofdebt.org/ . I have sent a few readers to Steve. Those readers have reported back to me and said that Steve was fantastic. I know Steve personally. He's a great guy.

For a critical look at personal finance, see BadMoneyAdvice.com. Frank is a good guy. Tell him I sent you.

Oh, and don't forget my friend LaToya over at http://credit.about.com/ .

And Brent over at http://blog.oregonlive.com/finance/ .

Well Marcus, it's been a great run! Just shy of the 1st year anniversary too.

I think you've found a very successful formula, if you ever plan to return to blogging later. Perhaps you could even go for a registered service mark if you're good ;-)

I'll re-register for the e-mail subscriptions again since I'm sure that the updates won't flood my mailbox as it did during the blog's heyday.

Keep in touch! Although we haven't met in person, it almost feels like we've known each other for a while (Funny how that goes, huh?). Best of luck on your new career and tell us how it goes won't you?

(BTW: I've always been considering a career in law myself if teaching Chemistry/Earth Science doesn't work out. Long story, so I'll leave it at that!)

CreditMattersBlog.com said...

In the future, I may have a legal blog. Who knows. Not foreclosing anything. I'll be sure to check in from time to time.

Best to you in whatever you do.

Glenn, what do you mean by post the articles? Links to the articles? That's pretty much what I've been doing of late. But I won't even have time for that in the future. That's what takes some time.

Staying focused? Easy. Have a goal. Execute it. Don't waver.

Keep this woman close to you; she may be the smartest person you know. Or at the very least, the wisest.

Make an effort to secure a judgeship as quickly as you can. Write your decisions in haiku, quatrains, rap, limerick, or whatever else strikes your fanny. Uh, fancy. Or take the easier route and become the next John Grisham. Sort of the same difference, but not really.

As you age, do whatever is necessary to avoid looking like Ruth Ginsburg. Kiss emo boys on the lips, even if you don't want to. Cultivate a shrill voice like that horrible woman on CNN, what's-her-face. Uh, Nancy Grace. Cultivate a shrill voice like hers. Your opponents will do anything to settle with you, as long as they don't have to hear you speak. Eat entire raw onions before either settlement conferences or kissing emo boys on the lips.

Well, that's it then. And thank you.

Just curious, have you considered letting any of your more involved/reliable readers post newsworthy articles on the blog (via the Blogger "Authors" option), to keep things up-to-date? I know it's your blog, but, if we can't have your thoughts...

Just a suggestion :) Good luck to you, and hopefully we'll at least still see you poke your head in occasionally!

Anonymous said...

So, let me gets this right. You developed a following for your blogs and then you are just going to walk away from it. Are you not appreciating know how much effort and time it takes to create a fan base? To have faithful readers for your writings? How many writers get this kind of following? Something to think about. If you do enjoy writing spontaneously, then think of it as a a calling. No amount of legal writing for your job will satisfy that.

Marcus,

Congratulations on finishing school, its a great feeling. While I may not always agree with the opinions (I do sit on the other side of the fence) I always enjoy the discussion and topical relevance of the blog. Instead of going off into the sunset, I would encourage you to open up posting to others besides yourself. Other credit blogs I read including AskMrCreditCard have done this to great effect. It takes the burden of posting off yourself but still gives you an outlet when something piques your interest to discuss. Something to think about. Good luck to you!

I understand your desire to be true to your employer and the career you have worked so hard to be a part of. Having said that it seems that making this site less active after you pass the bar may be a mistake. As a business owner and someone who has seen, first hand, how successful Attorneys pull in more accounts and dollars for their firms this site is a great source of clients. Here you have, and will have, 100's and 1000's of people who respect and trust you and who would ineveitably have reasons to use you as an Attorney (depending on the kind of law you go into of course). I am sure your employer would be thrilled to have a source of marketing for his firm such as this. Of course we all know that would not be your main reasoning for continuing. Good Luck on your endeavor and we will miss you big!!

Marcus, if loving this blog is wrong, I don't wanna be right. :) See you in San Diego sometime in the future, buddy!

Marcus;
There are plenty of lawyers out there- but not nearly enough with your insight, observational abilities and "people" skills. You'll be an asset to whatever firm picks you up, as well as to those you represent.
I'd tell you to do great things and kick some A%%- but I already know you will. ;)

I have never written in before but I read your blog religiously. I have learned so many things here that I can apply to my own life and the lives of others. I am so grateful for you and your kindness. You always have a way of stating things so as not to offend anyone. I know thia must be hard for you, but you are so worthy of that which is to come. We need more attorneys like you in the world. Congratulations of all of your many successes, including the decision to allow the blog to stay as an information source for those of us who need it. Thanks for all that you do.

CreditMattersBlog.com said...

The one thing that caught my eye in your post, PJ, was that it must have been difficult for me at times to not offend people. That's true. There were a few knuckleheads who posted on this site at times. But rather than get down in the mud with them, I just allowed them to get dirty. But, yes, it was often difficult to resist the temptation to hammer away. But I am glad I didn't engage in that garbage.

As for what you got from the blog, I am glad you were able to pull some stuff from this blog.

When I think of one thing, it's this: the goal should be to get debt free -- if someone isn't already. Use credit cards for month-to-month expenses but do not carry balances. Credit cards can be a terrible thing if they're used improperly. But use them correctly, and they're fine tools.

Thanks for the comment, PJ.

By the way, there are some 617 blog entries on my site. It would be difficult to keep track of all the comments that are still coming in if you didn't have a way to track them. However, there is a way to track every comment:

I'M SO DAMN LONELY NOW!

BTW, Marcus, I have friends and relatives in San Diego. Are you going to be based somewhere around there? If I hook up with them, perhaps I can look you up and give you a tough time!

If you come down to San Diego, let me know! I'm in northern San Diego.

Will do, Marcus.

I know how valuable your time is, so I won't be too much of a bother. ;-)

Man! I just found about your blog a few months ago, and I've been addicted!

I truly respect your decision, and at least you told us what's going on! Most bloggers just leave.

And BTW, have you though about selling the blog for some extra cash? ;)

CreditMattersBlog.com said...

Tom, I owe my readers. I would never just bail out without saying a peep. Not my style.

Not interested in selling the blog. One, I imagine it's not worth much (to anyone outside of me). And, two, I want to control the brand name -- in case I decide to do something with it later. It's likely not worth much to the outside world, but the name has some worth to me.

Took you long enough to graduate, huh? Maybe if you weren't blogging all the time...

Godspeed.

Haha. Actually graduated on time. Six semesters. Woot.

I respect your decision, However I got to tell you I now have a whole in my daily routine. I am very anal and attached and hate wholes in my routine. This is messing up my life no more CM to read. I may go insane. nah Just messing I'll miss your daily updates but hope someday you can do even more by sueing some collection agencies or sueing the CC companies and getting rid of arbirtation.

CreditMattersBlog.com said...

RUA, try it from my side. Seems odd that I am not blogging today -- especially with all of the credit card news flying around. I'm on Twitter, though, which is where I am pointing out all of the card news.

Wow this is great information, thank you so much. I wish there was a way to get the info from your blog to more people. I'm curious what is the highest FICO score you have ever heard of ? I was able to "reach" 845 last year by paying off my credit card balances before the statement dates.

clutchcargo said...

Anon@3:05

That's a very good trick to get your FICO's up right before a large purchase... Pay before the statement cuts.

CM: I can certainly understand as my own blog has taken a hit in the last 2-3 months due to an increased workload (not to mention my two little ones). So I haven't had time to research and write as I like. I know I will miss your daily blogs but good for you for prioritizing. I don't doubt you will be back as soon as you can.
You have my email so keep in touch. I will send luck your way for the bar but sure you don't need it!

CM - First and foremost, congratulations to you and your achievement of finishing school! I have no doubts in my mind that you will exceed your own expectations with the bar exam!

I don't know when next you'll be reading this comment, but I offer a suggestion that may allow you to keep the blog and it's community alive. Hire a blogger. I realize that may not be what you initially had in mind when you started this community, but I for one would love to see it continue. Within this frame of reference, you can focus on the things you are most passionate about, and still have a community of eager readers here when you do wish to make a return. Just my thoughts, for what they're worth.

I wish you the best of luck in all that you choose to do! It's been a pleasure reading your blog and I hope to read you again soon!

Heya, HelCat. Yep, very unlikely that I will be returning.

I am just coming up for air right now. Bar prep all day. I'll be going at it until the end of July. Then I will go on vacation for a much-needed break.

But smart to get on my mailing list. If I ever do post something, you'll be the first to know.

Discover bounced a credit line check for low rate good thru the 27th while showing the credit availble (thru the 25th) and now are stating they closed the account the day before the check was processed by the bank on the 21st. To make it right they insist on “reunderwriting it” would cause a new hit on my credit report, show as a new account and could have different (higher) terms, I believe credit card companies are taking such action to get around the President’s new law.
The details are egregious:

1) The check was written on the 18th (before Discover supposedly closed the account due to inactivity on the 20th) and long before the offer end date of the 27th.

2) I checked on-line to double-check the credit line prior to using the check.

3) I mailed the check to my Denver bank from Asheville and they processed it on the 21st (I have the bank by mail deposit slip -it stands to reason that it takes 3-4 days for the mail to get from NC to Co)

4) Discover emailed me on the 25th to let me know they bounced the check due to cash advance line. The email clearly states that I was getting the email because I am a “Discover Cardmember.” Upon calling to inquire about it, Discover's customer service rep stated that my bank made the mistake by the way they processed i and refused to even refund the $35 bounced check fee.

5) So on the 25th and 26th (6 days after Discover supposedly closed my account)
- I had received no notification by either mail or email (and still haven’t as of the 28th) of account closure.
- Discover on-line computers showed the account as active with a $35 balance due and a credit line of over $9000 available. (I printed a dated screen shot)
- Discover's own phone rep read the account as open and provided me a different reason for the check bouncing.

6) Only after going thru the hassle of checking with my bank and insisting on speaking with a manager did I get the ‘your account is closed’ explanation.

Upon calling their accounts closed section and providing the info above, they refunded the $35 bounced check fee but refused to make the check good without "re-underwriting" it. Esentially open a new account with higher fees and put a new hit and new account which would lower my credit score.

Grats on the law school accomplishments!

Aww, c'mon Marcus. I haven't seen another option.. elect a 'ghost writer' to keep the blog going, someone who wants to and will do the same thing you are doing, and leaving you in a more administrative role for the blog, versus being scarce. :) I'm not volunteering, no time for that, nor talent that you have, but surely you could find someone among the plethora of your readers who could emulate your style somewhat. :)

First of all congrats on the Graduation. Graduated (Coolage) myself on may 10th and got shipped off out of the country the next day to visit my grand father(85 years old failing heath but the mind is still kicking it at high gears) and just got back two days ago and saw this.

If you get rid of the domain name and server backup the blog some place or do a backup of the entire blog posts and provide it for download to allow future readers to reference it. It would be sad to see all the posts dissaper.

Good luck on the bar exam we are all rooting for you.

Raz, I am using Google's blogspot server. No worries about this place disappearing. And I have saved all of the stories already. Thanks for the advice, regardless.

Congrats on your graduation!

All good things come to and end. It's the natural evolution of life.

Your site opened many eyes to what was going on around them; for that you have done your best to provide a public service not available elsewhere.

Well Done.

This was an excellent blog! I am also studying for the bar, which I can't believe is in a couple of months. Today I FINALLY got the Citi bank rate increase/opt-out letter. Unfortunately, law school has driven my card up to the max at $15,000!!!! My rate has gone from 6% to 29.99%!!!!!!! I was in tears on the phone today as I was told there is nothing they can do. Of course, this is my longest card at 7 years, I am never late, and I am without a job. So it's come to, do I start having late payments (because there will be no way for me to pay this increase as I am also jobless), or opt out and mess up my credit history???? Geez!!

Anonymous said...

Hope all is going well. I just wanted to say that I truly appreciated the work you put into the blog. It's been about a year since I stumbled onto your blog. Thanks for taking the time to educating your readers. I was successfully able to get a rate reduction and balance transfer to a lower rate last year. One year later as the July 2010 date draws closer Citibank is at it again. Got a new letter rate increase letter. Back to my legislators I go. Thank you again. We miss you!
